Since 2002, the fund has gone from strength to strength with a hard working volunteer fundraising committee of eight people. The fundraising committee organise five events a year, which are a Sportsman Dinner, a Valentines Dinner Dance, a fun night at a local club and Grand National Day. All the events are well attended and help raise much-needed funds. Another fund raising event takes place in August when the Garry Chappelow Memorial Fund in partnership with the Leeds Rugby Foundation holds a Children's Day Carnival at the Headingley Carnegie Stadium. This attracts almost 3000 children and their parents, and is always a fun filled day.
The Garry Chappelow Memorial Fund committee receive written applications from sports teams and individuals requesting funds for things like new kit, new equipment, and various other things. Each application received is discussed by the committee, which can award a maximum of £600 per request. The fund has so far donated in the region of £80,000 to amateur junior sports teams and individuals. The fund is well supported by a handful of local firms as well as generous friends.
The registered charity "Garry Chappelow Memorial Fund" presented a cheque of £1,000 to the Leeds Rugby Foundation, at the Castleford Tigers game at Headingley, 7 June 2013, the cheque took the total donations, since the fund was formed in 2002, to a magical figure of £100,000, donated to junior, amateur sports teams, a fantastic achievement for the fund and massive benefit to sport in Leeds over the last decade.
The funds motto: - Try to get as many of the local kids off the streets, away from many vices and in the long term keep them fit and healthy and for them to instil lifelong friendships.
